Ken Fury’s 5th album, Plains of Inferno is a whirlwind of tribal thrumping, synth sounds and low vocalizing, with the NYC-based songwriter, composer, performer and producer mining the likes of Bowie and Newman as much as his Nuevomexicano and Indigenous Genízaro background. I love these 11, from the riot-of-track, “When The Land Blows Dust,” to Fury singing as much as talking on the kinetic “Through the Trees,” (and on an album full of lots of breakneck speed beats to pick out one tune for its pace is saying something) with its light touches of single keynotes in the slight change-up of the chorus to the droplet sounds of fantastic “Becoming the Mountain,” with its bends and tickles bends to, what for me, is the best song here (and what it feels like what the entire album was pushing to) the pulsating epic “Heat,” one gets taken on quite the ride on Plains of Inferno. And one will be very happy indeed that they sat next to Fury as he steers, makes hi singular vision known and infects you with songs you will go back to and listen to again and again.
